For bird lovers
Lubuskie Region, with its many rivers, backwaters, ponds and lakes, offers a fantastic opportunity of aquatic birds watching which cannot be compared with anywhere else. The whole length of the Odra River in Lubuskie Region is a protected area. The Ujście Warty National Park is a huge area of habitat for many bird species and also Santockie Zakola, which is the mouth of the Noteć River to the Warta River. All these areas are protected under the Natura 2000 network.
Natura 2000 areas in Lubuskie cover 75 areas which are covering more than 25% of Lubuskie Region, including 11 spedal protection areas for birds and 62 special areas including habitat protection area and 1 with double protection status, which is both a special protection area for birds and special protection area for habitats. This shows how rich is the region in bird life.
Naturalists certified the presence, in Lubuskie Region, of about 300 species of birds, of which two thirds are nesting here. The most diverse and distinctive group of birds are aquatic and marsh birds. Lubuskie Region nests at least 10 species of ducks. Garganey Duck occurs oniy in the Ujście Warty National Park which nests up to 150 of them. In the area of the park, there are about a hundred nesting ducks of another variety – kwakwa.
Another duck associated with flooding and wet meadows in the valleys of large rivers is Northern shoveler.
